Ottawa, ON – June 7, 2020 – At 7 p.m. tonight the grand fundraising total of $7,375,767 was announced on the CHEO Telethon on CTV Ottawa. This final total is an accumulation of a year of community giving. From kids donating their birthday money to sponsors supporting events and an abundance of local fundraising, it’s clear that our region has an unwavering dedication to CHEO.
This spring, the COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of many fundraising events. Because children and youth still need the best possible healthcare while we respond to COVID-19, the annual CHEO Telethon was more important than ever and moved to a virtual format so that it could take place safely while still collecting much needed funds for CHEO, the CHEO Research Institute and Roger Neilson House. In these trying times, CHEO turned to the community to give if they can, and the response has shown enormous generosity and compassion. In times of need, we can proudly say that we are Stronger Together.
From May 25 to June 7, people were encouraged to visit www.cheotelethon.com where they could watch six touching videos that featured CHEO families. Thanks to our generous corporate community all online donations were matched, ensuring every gift has double the impact!
“The CHEO Telethon on CTV continues to be about the care and research at CHEO made possible by our community, the amazing children and youth who rely on CHEO and the passionate and skillful people who care for them,” said Kevin Keohane, CHEO Foundation President and CEO. “The COVID-19 pandemic has reminded all of us about the importance of good health, of always being prepared for the unexpected and the vital importance of research. I want to thank our community for continuing to be an important part of CHEO’s team and for helping to ensure kids and families get the care and support they need – no matter what.”
This incredible financial support allows CHEO to serve the 500,000 children and youth who will need programs and services in the coming year. It will allow CHEO to provide life-saving treatments, purchase state-of-the-art medical equipment and conduct world-class research to benefit children, youth and families. While navigating unprecedented times, the people in our region have once again made the Telethon a success. Together we are creating a stronger community and a stronger CHEO.
