The Advantage of Donating Securities
To Support the children, youth and families at CHEO in a way that is the most tax-effective for you, you can donate publicly traded securities. When you donate a publicly traded security with appreciated value, you do not pay tax on those capital gains, and your charitable donation tax receipt is valued at the fair market values of those securities on the date of transfer.
Please see the table below which illustrates the benefit of giving to the CHEO Foundation through gift of securities.
- Marginal tax rate estimated at 46% which is applied to 50% of the capital gain
- This amount represents the market value of the securities less the capital gains tax
- Your charitable tax credit based on Ontario and Federal rates combined
How To Give
Transferring your appreciated securities to the CHEO Foundation is easy. Simply complete the Gift of Securities Form (PDF document) and give it to your broker to complete the transaction.
